Why Your Process is the Key to the Fastest-Growing Pet Category

In pet food processing, dogs have long held the spotlight. But the data from 2024 and 2025 tells a new story: Cat food is now the fastest-growing major category in pet care, outperforming dog food significantly.

As cat owners transition into cat parents, the demand for premium, functional, and wet formats is skyrocketing. However, for manufacturers, cat food presents a unique set of engineering challenges that go far beyond what works for kibble. At Blentech, we’ve spent decades bridging the gap between specific recipe needs and industrial-scale production.

The Hydration Hurdle: Why Wet is Winning

Unlike dogs, cats have a low voluntary water intake, making them prone to urinary and renal issues. This has turned premium wet food into a multi-billion dollar market in the U.S. alone. A win for cat owners isn’t just meeting their nutritional needs, it’s helping keep them hydrated, too.

  • Inclusion Integrity: Cats are notoriously finicky eaters. They demand a specific mouthfeel, which often means manufacturers must maintain identifiable meat chunks while maximizing throughput. Our agitators are built to handle these delicate high-meat batches gently, ensuring your most discerning furry consumer gets the texture they expect without the mush common in high-speed lines.
  • Smooth Purées and Mousse: On the other end of the spectrum, the market for ultra-smooth mousses and pâtés is growing rapidly. Here, the challenge is emulsification. We utilize on-board shear for consistent texture within the batch, or shear loops to emulsify specific ingredients externally before they are reintroduced to the main cooker body. These shear options allow for a perfectly homogenous finish that meets the highest palatability standards.
  • Rapid Cooling: To protect heat-sensitive vitamins and probiotics, which cat owners now actively seek, you must pull temperatures down fast post-cook. Our vacuum cooling systems stop carryover cooking instantly. We also offer cryogenic cooling solutions using CO2 and Nitrogen. For the most demanding applications, a combined vacuum and cryogen system provides the ultimate level of protection for active ingredients, preserving both the nutritional stability and the delicate texture of the final product.

Production Spotlight: For decades, Blentech has engineered production lines for leading national cat food brands. These systems utilize jacketed ASME screws designed to heat from both the augers and the jacket simultaneously. This dual-source heating ensures deep, even thermal penetration across the entire batch, protecting the integrity of the chunks while achieving precise pathogen kill temperatures at industrial speeds.

The “Human-Grade” Compliance Trap

The term “Human Grade” is a powerful premium signal, fueled by the emerging “one pantry” concept: a philosophy where pet owners view their animals’ dietary needs as an extension of their own, sharing the same high-quality ingredients and safety standards. However, while the marketing is compelling, the execution is technically and legally demanding. In the U.S., AAFCO and the FDA require that every ingredient and the final product be handled in full compliance with human-food law (21 CFR Part 117).

For many, this is a barrier to entry that doesn’t necessarily improve the nutritional outcome for the cat. At Blentech, we believe that whether you are aiming for high quality or meeting the regulatory burden of “human grade” the technical requirements remain the same:

  • Hygienic Design by Default: In a human-grade facility, smooth, contoured welds and integrated CIP (Clean-In-Place) systems are regulatory requirements. In a premium facility, they are simply the best way to ensure batch-to-batch safety and reduce the labor burden of manual sanitation.
  • Process Integrity over Marketing Rhetoric: With rising concerns over Salmonella and Listeria in minimally processed cat foods, a repeatable, automated cooking curve is your best defense against a recall, regardless of whether the food is destined for human-grade refrigerator space or a bag of kibble on the shelf.

Scaling Complexity Without Chaos

Like dog owners, cat owners are looking for variety, toppers, and science-based diets. For a co-manufacturer, this means managing a high volume of SKUs with varying textures, from pâtés to chunky stews.

Our AutoChef and ARTIS systems manage these recipes and validated cooking curves so that your 100th batch is identical to your first. This level of automation, combined with our upcoming integrated lot tracking and bar code scanning, allows you to scale complexity and secure your audit trail without adding operational chaos.

Digital Traceability: Securing the Audit Trail

In a premium production environment, absolute traceability is non-negotiable. To eliminate the risk of human error in manual logging, we are soon launching an integrated Ingredient Lot Bar Code Scanning feature.

Directly integrated into the automation, this feature utilizes ultra-rugged, industrial-grade scanners to capture alphanumeric lot IDs in real-time. By associating every scan with the specific batch ID and recipe step, we help you build an ironclad electronic audit trail that flows directly into your ARTIS batch reports, ensuring compliance and superior QA for even the most complex multi-ingredient formulas.

The Blentech Innovation Center

We use our Innovation Center to prove these processes every day. Whether you are building a dedicated human-grade line or a high-performance premium wet plant, we help you test the quality vs. compliance boundaries before you commit to a full line.
